High School Counselor Internship Program

The Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) is the agency responsible for administering student financial aid programs provided by the State of Georgia. The Georgia General Assembly established the Commission in 1965 to help Georgia citizens attain an education beyond high school. GSFC administers a variety of scholarship and grant programs, including the HOPE Scholarship Program. The Commission makes low-interest federal Stafford and PLUS loans to students and parents, and GSFC is the only lender in Georgia providing service-cancelable loans to encourage students to train for careers in critical need areas such as teaching and health care. Alternative loans and consolidated loans also are available to qualified borrowers. GSFC is also responsible for the website www.GAcollege411.org, the website created to help students plan, apply and pay for college.

In partnership to assist Georgia High School Counselors in counseling students on financial aid, GSFC is offering high school counselors the opportunity to participate in our High School Counselor Internship Program (HSCIP). The HSCIP gives each selected high school counselor the opportunity to attend a GSFC sponsored 2½-day Financial Aid training session.

Upon successful completion of the training, interns will be placed with a college financial aid office to work at during the summer. Interns are expected to work a minimum of four weeks in the college financial aid office following a schedule agreed upon by the financial aid office and the intern. Each intern can work no more than 200 hours in the High School Counselor Internship Program. Counselors will be paid a maximum of $14 per hour which includes the employer share of payroll taxes.
